My Journey through Educational Technology and Design

I applied for the ETAD program after I unsuccessfully applied and interviewed for a Learning Tech Consultant position in my school division. I was one of three candidates with interviews and was apparently very close to being successful. I knew that was the path I wanted my career to head down, so I applied for ETAD with the intention of being the sucessful applicant the next time a position came up.

Accepted

After receiving my acceptance, I met with Dr. Rick Schwier regarding the courses I would take throughout the program. In this meeting Rick opened my eyes to a world of career opportunities that I never even knew existed. He asked questions like, “Would you like to work for WestJet?" and "How about working for a company like Intuit?”. He informed that graduates of the ETAD program had gone on to such companies as Instructional Designers. Hearing about these graduates who went on to become learning or education technology consultants and instructional designers was inspiring. I went home from that meeting filled with excitement and a goal!

My Development

My experience in this program has been great for my development as a professional in many different areas. I have reviewed my course syllabi and reflected on my experience to create a list of the areas of skills that I developed the most. The different pages on this site explore each of these areas and presents evidence of my work and growth.

My Path

My path through this program began in September 2011 (here is a blog post from my very first day of classes) with Instructional Design (ETAD 873) and then Advanced Instructional Design (ETAD 874). I then took Historical and Theoretical Foundations of Educational Technology (ETAD 802). It was during this class that I changed careers from working as a classroom teacher to an Instructional Design Assistant. During that time period, I also took Multimedia Design for Instruction (ETAD 803). In the next two semesters I took Designing for Distance Education (ETAD 804) and Research Methods (ERES 800). To finish off my program, I took Advanced Video Design for Learning (ETAD 879) and completed this portfolio for Scholarship in Teaching (ETAD 991).
